ROW SEVENTY‑FIVE[1]

Poppy the Broker's Row (1800)[2]

Old Fountain North Row*

West end, Row 75.

“Jonathan Poppy, a furniture broker, residing at the south‑west corner, was the fortunate gentleman  who  purchased  the magnificent south gate in 1812 for £26 for demolition.  As  an  attraction it would be worth  as  many  thousands  today  (and that was Johnson's comment in 1927!)  Hansell's coal offices were situated at the south‑west corner,  and the post  office cycle store  at the south‑east corner”, wrote Harry Johnson, in his notebook.

From Hall Quay to Howard Street, row 75 was the last row from this part of the Quay. The house at the South‑West  corner was occupied by Jonathan Poppy, a broker and auctioneer, who died in 1844 aged 70.  *1

At the north‑west corner is  in  1992,  Ian  Miller Associates, Chartered Quantity Surveyors, at 32 Hall Plain. On the south‑west  corner is Allen's  of Middlegate, public house. There is a door into the  row from the corner of Allen's, numbered 1a. The buildings on the south side of  this row have been  converted  from  an old warehouse into smart small shops. At present,  nos.3 and 4 are  vacant  and  "To  Let". no.3 was "Buffalo". Then there is  "Bubbles",  and  no.2  is Rare Cuts hairdressers. Angie,(1987)  now  here  had  a hairdressers above Friends Bistro  in  Deneside  for  a while, and spent a year or two on a kibbutz, returning to start this hairdressers.   At the south‑east corner of the row is Tucker, tea coffee and hot snacks,  licensed restaurant.  On  the  north side is Lanes Bistro, a pleasant little  snack  shop  that sells snack meals  and teas. There is another shop there, still empty, and  an empty office also.

TOWN HALL ROW    This is the opening south of  the  Town Hall which  was known in early times as the "South Foreland", and "Furlong's End". Two taverns existed  on  the  south side, The"Royal Oak", which became a tailor's shop, the other being the "Yarmouth Arms"; Walter Wicks in  his book "Norwich Inns", quotes one in Norwich a hundred years ago.*2
