Row One Hundred and Twenty Two map
From
Middlegate to King Street:
The Spread Eagle Tavern was opposite this row
on the east side of King Street. Many
rows attained their names and thoroughfares leading to a tavern or Tradesman's
shop. Some unique chamfered door jambs were to be seen at no.8. Formerly there
was a half-timbered residence here.*2
Row 122 ran from Middlegate Street to King
Street. On the front of the house, number 47 in Middlegate Street, was to be
seen the date 1633 in ironwork. Peter
Kirkman had property in this row, in respect of which he voted at the County
election in 1714 in favour of Hare and Earle. On the south side of this row, a
half‑timbered house still remained in 1874, but clearly had been
demolished before Johnson described it above. *1
