For H.B.J., old directories made interesting reading, and Pigot's National  Commercial Directory vol.3, Yarmouth records the following‑ "Carpenter, James Huke, Huke's Row". "Remembering that all our rows were numbered in 1804, this entry some 26 years later, together with hundreds of others proved to him that tradesmen's names to rows were more popular than numbers". In Oct 1904, Mr.G.E.Woolsey applied to have the row concreted, and in February 1905 successfully petitioned for a post to be erected to prohibit vehicular traffic through the row. The entrance at the east end is but seven foot high. There was an overhanging house on the north side, and some prettily dentalled doorways here. *2

From Middlegate to King Street, this row was called Captain Christmas' Row. At the north‑west corner of this row facing Middlegate Street, was in  Palmer's time, an old house bearing the date 1601 in iron letters.
