 From South Quay to Middlegate:

"The west entrance was worthy of close inspection. Under a series  of arches there was a twelve foot doorway unique in Yarmouth, of exquisite design. Two fluted pillars supported a bold overdoor, this at the south-west corner belonged to no.37 South Quay. Lacons had extensive maltings on the north side, leading to row 123".[1]

Miss Hackney

Row no.124 ran from South Quay to Middlegate Street. It was formerly  called Cat and Monkey Row, from the name of the tavern on Middlegate. In the early part of the 18th century,  the house at the south‑west corner was occupied by Capt.Ridsdale, who had been Barrack Master; afterwards by James Laws, agent for the London traders, (his son was Mayor of Beccles), and later by William Briggs, a Yorkshireman, who settled in Yarmouth, became a J.P., and eventually died in 1864, aged 63.  At the south‑east corner of this row, facing Middlegate Street, was a good specimen of a second‑class house of the early 17th.century, comprising a first and ground floor only,  with an attic having a large dormer window. *1

Charles Hackney of no.5, was the brother of Florence May, who married William Linnaker. Hackney senior's wife died in 1910. He was tall and bearded, and lived latterly in the work-house at Northgate. He lived well enough since he had Sunday lunch with his daughter, and then walked up the row to his son's at no.5 for his tea and a pint of beer. He had returned from the first war badly wounded, one leg amputated, to meet and marry a widow who already had the four children. No more were born subsequent to the marriage.  Another son of Charles senior,  Albert Hackney (at no.2a), married May, the sister of  William Linaker.

Charles Hackney kept pigeons in the loft of no.5. During the day he would stand and mardle with the men on the quayside.  The house had its yard and wash-house and outside toilet. There was one large ground-floor room, one large first-floor bedroom, and the attic above.  The toilets in the yard at the back were two together for nos. 4 and 5.
