From South Quay to Middlegate Street:

"Andrew Bracey resided at the north‑west corner. Prior to National Board Schools, Dames schools and Academics were general in Yarmouth. In the three herrings row, a teacher in nautical subjects, Richard Sutton, resided and had his class. He was the son of Thomas Sutton, who died on Nelson Column in 1827. (see Row 85)  The covered portion spanning the row, is eagerly snapped by photographers, the shrimper's sign‑ "Live And Boiled Shrimps Sold By The Catcher", is no longer to be seen in the row".[1]

“Called Three Herring Row, from the sign of a public house at the south‑west corner.   It marked the south boundary of the custom house quay, and was called Mr.John Cooper's South Row, also Alms House Row, because in it were some houses belonging to the Hurry family, used for that purpose, which were afterwards the property of Baron Alderson.

In the latter part of the 18th.C., the above-mentioned house was the property of Stephen Godfrey, who devised it with other property of considerable amount to his niece, Sarah Elizabeth, the wife of Samuel Paget Esq. The front, which remained for the most-part unchanged, except the ground floor, which was boxed out, is a fair specimen of the style prevalent in the 17th.century.

At the north‑west corner of row 136 was a large house with a cut‑flint front, which early in the 18th.C., was the property of Andrew Bracey, Mayor in 1714, died 1731, aged 79. The house passed to his grand‑daughter Margaret, married to James Milleson, on her marriage, and he then passed it to Mrs.Margaret Le Grice, who in 1767 to William Manning. In 1790 Manning sold his house on the quay to Thomas Custins, after which time the front was encased in white brick, and the house divided into two occupations. Under Custins' will the house next to the row was sold in 1805 to John Shelly, grandson of John Shelly, who lived in Friars Lane. Shelly their son, the purchaser of the house in due course, was a partner in the firm of Thomas Hurry and Co.

At the north‑east corner of row 136, fronting Middlegate Street, was a public house rebuilt in the 19th.century, called "The New Fountain". This property was purchased in 1769 by William Norton.   In the 18th.century, there was on the South Quay, a public house called the "Three Kings", kept by Robin Sadd, who, said Dr.Carlisle, writing in 1745, when he landed at Yarmouth on his way from Scotland, "standing at his own door near to the south end of the quay, had an inviting aspect and a manner, that I could not resist him. It was perhaps not second best, but it was cleanly. I stayed two nights with him".”[2]
