From South Quay to Middlegate Street:

"The large cut‑flint fronted house at the south‑east corner occupied by Delf the grocer's (established 1768), is worthy of attention. It has the date 1591 in iron figures upon the front. This row as the name suggests, links up row 137 by a cross row. Cow sheds existed in this row.  The lofty 14 foot doorway of excellent design at no.12 excites admiration. Four steps lead into the entrance hall. The "Dog and Duck", a well known Quay Tavern, was at the north‑west corner”.[1]

“Formerly called "Union Row", but more recently "Dog and Duck Row" from a public house at the north‑west corner which had a painted sign representing a dog chasing a duck in the water.

At the south‑west corner was a house which for many years was the property and residence of William Danby Palmer Esq., and he purchased an estate of 400 acres of land at Loddon, and Hales Green.  At the south‑east corner of this row, fronting Middlegate Street there was a house with a flint front, divided in 19th.C. into two occupations, which bears the date 1591, in iron figures. On selling the estate at Loddon, on a complaint that the fine old mansion was haunted, Mr.Palmer was induced to pull it down, and erect a modern residence for his son Samuel Palmer.”[2]  See the undercroft below; not surprising!

John Durrant  in 1879 was living in row 138, he was a fish‑curer, his wife was Anne Maria Batley, and his father was William. He was born at School yard, Pockthorpe, Norwich. (near the Puppet Theatre). He had twelve children, the first three born in Norwich, Arthur, Leah, Catherine, May, Albert, Ernest, Maud, Ethel, Rose, Florence, William, and Percy. He stayed here about three years, and then went to Norwich as a policeman. Durrant's cottages appear in a publication of the rows as being in row 138a .

These amazing pictures taken by Phillip Rumbelow[3], show some sort of crypt at the site of Row 138. Robert Postle described this in an interview, and said it survives to this day, being merely filled in.
