On May 29th
1919 there was a solar eclipse, seen a few degrees below the
equator, and two British expedidions were sent to take photographs of stars in
the solar corona, to be compared with pictures taken when the sun did not
intervene. The fact that the light from the star moved slightly in position was
taken as proof that gravity moved the light. Asked what he would have said if
the experiment had not proved positive, Einstein had the gall to say “In that
case I’d have to feel sorry for God, because the theory is correct!”
In fact the light was bent because of the increased density
of dark matter around the sun, and not by a force called gravity.
