Brenda Rohl2 who researched the above data made the following comment:

In 1902 when Henry Euean Rumble died, along with the abstract for his Will appeared the admins of Henry, Frances Mary3 and Joseph Humfrey4 Rumble in the same volume . . . Henry, Frances and Joseph all died a long time before 1902, and were not in a position to have ,100 - especially Henry! Grace must have discovered that there were no death duties or taxes to be paid if a person left less than ,100, and as no will or admin had been granted for her deceased brothers or sister, she invented the ,99 each (this would have been left to their father, but as he had died, it was indirectly left to her.) Hence Henry Rumble did not write a will, nor did Frances or Joseph. I believe their names were only used for Grace's benefit as a tax dodge.

lanche was the fourth child of Henry Rumble & Grace Humfrey. She was born in 1864 at Eastbourne, England and died on 11 July 1949 at Worthing1. She remained single, training as a nurse at St. Batholemews, London. She corresponded regularly with both Kate Rumble2 and Dorothy Fall3, and was the source of much of the Rumble family information contained in this record.

Blanche was always interested in the family but was sometimes regarded as a troublemaker4.

The entry in the Index of Wills states:

ercy is believed to be the youngest child of Henry Rumble & Grace Humfrey. It is likely that she was born in 1877 but her precise date of her birth is not known1.  She  remained single and lived in West Worthing in the later part of her life. She corresponded regularly with Kate Rumble2 and Dorothy Fall3.

In her home at West Worthing she had on her wall a framed parchment of the de Brotherton coat of arms. This was passed to  Joseph Duncan Rumble4 and was in his possession in 1990. Mercy died at Camberley on 3 August 1964.

rederick William Anthony was the son of Anthony Knight & Letitia Hochee. He was born on 3 August 1864. His date of marriage is not known. He died on 12 October 1932 at Hendon, England.

Fred became an engineer on a cable ship in South America. Henry St.John Knight1 stated that Fred sailed for Rio on 2 November 1894 to join the Western Brazilian Telegraph company, having signed a three year engagement; he returned in November 1896. He married Mary Gerard Rawlinson in Pernambuco (Recife), a coastal port in Brazil. They had no children.  His sister Kate2 noted in her diary that on 13 March 1911, at Pernambuco, he was received into the Catholic church. In April 1919 Fred was possibly about to return to Britain from Brazil, since his sister Kate notes in her diary that she wrote two letters him on the same day, one addressed to Brazil, the other to the family home at Blackheath.

Dorothy Fall3 stated that he retired back in England but could not stand the cold so bought a lovely home called "La Fosse" at Guernsey in the Channel Islands.

In 1922 he inherited ,500 from his Uncle Sydney Poole Lowdell4.

enry, the son of Anthony Knight & Letitia Hochee, was born on 24 July 1867 in New Zealand.  He married three times and died on 28 January 1951 at Winchester. He was in the Army Royal Engineers, served in South Africa, Palestine, the Far East, and Canada. He built army huts at Salisbury Plains, England, in the first world war.

Before joining the army, he worked at Gravesend but, in October 1892, at the age of 23, he left his work there to study at home for exams as Assistant Surveyor Royal Engineers, Civil Staff War Office.

In November 1893 he went up for his exams, which took  six days. Fourteen took the exams for only four vacancies. In January 1894 he commenced duty at Woolwich as Warrant Officer Surveyor, having taken fourth place in the exams. On 31 March 1894 he left Woolwich to take up duty at Devonport.

Henry became engaged on 25 August 1892 to Ellen Theresa Glanville and married at Blackheath on 5 July 18941. Ellen was known as Nellie, and they held a wedding reception with sixty-five relatives and friends present. Then followed a three week honeymoon at Southwold.

Living at Plymouth, Henry returned to work at Devonport. He was transferred to Shorncliffe Camp2 on 9 October 1896, where he lived in a large house but was later given an overseas posting.

In 1897 he wrote to his sister Kate3 about his life at Shorncliffe[1]:

I have most comfortable quarters here with 3 acre kitchen garden attached, and a nice strip of lawn but am expecting my turn abroad within this year or early next. Our little boy who we now call "Anton" is nearly two years old - our only one, but the life of our small household.

It seemed rather remarkable to me that I should be sent to Shorncliffe. I remember so well 20 years ago when we stayed at (Hatton?) House Sandgate how we used to walk up the hill with the Pater and see the troops. Our situation is delightful - the best in thewhole camp - The house stands on the edge of a hill looking up a lovely wooded valley to the right with picturesque houses dotted here and there between the trees - to the left we see Hythe and right across a bay to Dungeness Point - 16 miles across.

I have done all the work in the garden and have a good supply of nearly every vegetable. The quarters, for which I only have to pay ,20 a year, contain the following rooms & all large rooms. Drawing room, spare bedroom, pantry, dining room, nursery, best bedroom, W.C., servant's bedroom, lumber room, wine cellar, passage 60 feet long, kitchen, scullery, coal cellar, store & larder & bathroom.  You will be interested, I know, to hear that I am now getting ,210 per annum but, as we are obliged to keep a nurse as well as a general servant, I find it none too much.

The flower garden, too, is very nice with plenty of roses and flowers to supply the vases all the summer.  The great drawback is when one is moved, the moving of furniture is not repaid so I was over ,20 out of pocket when I came from Devonport.  In going abroad, Nell's passage will be paid by the War Department & also Anton's which is an (???) - I have no idea at present where we will be sent to next. The pay, however, is always greatly increased at foreign stations.

4 "Shortie" is presumably a nickname for Henry Vincent Shortland (13063M), the

husband of Alice.

5 The exact address of Henry's house is not known but John Fall (16021M) has an envelope addressed to Mrs H.H. Rumble, around 1900-1902, on the back of which is written "Major H.St.John Knight, 15 Anchor Road, Eastleigh, Hampshire."

Pater & Mater both keep well, and now are at Eastbourne with Aunt Alice & Shortie4, the latter being over 90 and still hale.

There is great commotion everywhere over the coming Queen's Diamond Jubilee. I am not going to see it - they say over 4 million of people will witness the procession & enormous prices are being paid for some of the seats. Hitchcock & Williams facing St.Paul's churchyard realising ,7,000 for Jubilee week.... 5

Henry and Nellie had only one child, Anthony Henry [who was known as Anton]. Nellie died in 1897 giving birth to their second child, a daughter. The baby also died at birth. Henry maintained contact with his sister Kate Rumble and niece Dorothy Fall.

enry's second marriage, at St.Peter's in Brighton, was to his cousin, Mary Emily (May) Pocock1.  By this marriage there was a daughter, Edith, who died in infancy, and then two sons, Ernest St.John and William Crawford. Anton Knight2, Henry's son by his first marriage, said that the Chinese strain showed strongly in Ernest and William, `particularly the latter as, of course, his mother was the daughter of one of Granny's sisters, Annie Pocock.'

Henry went to several postings during his army career. He wrote to his sister Kate3 in September 1920 from Palestine. In that year, his wife, May, wrote to Kate from Brighton.

He retired on 24 July 19274.

In 1922 Henry inherited about ,500 stg. from his uncle Sydney Poole Lowdell5 The entry in the Index of Wills for his brother Frederick, granted probate to Henry St.John and stated him as a Major in H.M.Army.

May died late in March 1943 and Henry remarried for the third time.

ary Emily, the daughter of Dr Crawford John Pocock and Ann Hochee, was born on 8 August 1872. Little is known of her. The diaries of Kate Rumble1 consistently refer to her as "May." 4 See Anton's comments regarding Susie's father.

n August 1943, at the age of 75 Henry married Susie, a young girl in her twenties.  Almost immediately, on 17 August 1943, he remade his Will. There is some confusion as both Dorothy Fall1 and Anton Knight2 said that Susie's surname was Meager. However, Brenda Rohl3 reported that the London Record Office showed that the marriage of Henry St.John Knight and Susie W.M. Turrell was registered in the parish of Salisbury for the September quarter of 1943, [Reference 5a 488.]

Henry had three children by this third marriage, the first being a son, Percy, born in September 1944. The second child was Graham, born in 1946, and the third John, born in 1948.

Henry died on 28 January, 1951 at Winchester at the age of 82. Dorothy Fall stated that he left his entire estate of ,20,000 to Susie, and that Anton, his eldest son by his first marriage, was very upset by this4.

However, the abstract of Henry's will states:

KNIGHT Henry St.John of 13 Archers Road, Eastleigh, Hampshire died 28th January 1951 at the Royal Hants County Hospital Winchester. PROBATE Winchester 21st March to Arthur Charles Morrish Sol. Effects ,730. 4s.

This is at variance with the ,20,000 stated by Dorothy Fall. It is possible that he may have made a gift of most of his estate to Susie well before he died, or that Dorothy Fall romanticised the amount. His last Will and Testament is very simple. He left his entire estate to Susie and gave, as burial instructions:

I desire that my body be buried by my Brethren in the Lord with whom I have been in fellowship for over fifty years and locally represented at the Meeting Room Northlands Road Eastleigh I direct that my body be laid to rest in Plot D.184 in the Eastleigh and Bishopstoke Cemetery which plot I purchased on the nineteenth day of February One thousand nine hundred and thirty two under receipt number 1775.

hurchill, or "Church" as he was known in the family, the youngest child of Anthony Knight & Letitia Hochee, was born at Elham, England probably in 1879.  The London Records Office listed his birth in the quarterly edition for March 1879, for the parish of Elham, reference 2a 992.  Presumably he was born early in 1879, or in 1878. In the 1881 census, when his parents were at 28 Hyde Gardens, Eastbourne, he was listed as 2 years of age.

In 1897, his brother Henry St.John1 wrote to his sister Kate2:

Churchill is finishing his schooling at Radley College near Oxford & is now 18 years of age.

The following entry occurs in the book: Register of St.Peter's College, Radley:

Michaelmas 1893 - Knight, Churchill (Master - Mr Bryans) son of Anthony Knight of 2 Vanbrough Tce Blackheath F xi 18973, left 1898 II. Electrical Engineer. m. 1906 Daisy Maud dau of William Charles Burnett of Brantwood, Oakcroft Road Blackheath."

Churchill went on to Oxford and, in 1906, married Daisy Burnett. The English Civil Registration from 1837 Index shows his marriage recorded in the parish of Lewisham for the December 1906 quarter, reference 1d 2004, where it is stated that he married Daisy Maud Burnett.  After his marriage he went with his wife to Shanghai to work as an engineer.

In her diary, his sister Kate recorded writing her first letter to Churchill's wife Daisy in Shanghai on 20 October 1917.

According to Dorothy Fall4 he was "well off", eventually owning a stud farm. In 1922 he inherited about ,500 stg. from his Uncle Sydney Poole Lowdell5. He retired back to England in 1934 at the age of 55 to live in Devon. He and Daisy had one son, Ronald, who was tragically killed in an air crash over Africa.  Churchill died on 8 May 1942.

eorge Edward Fall was born on 19 October 1850. Nothing is known of his first marriage. Just before the turn of the century he married Emily Louisa McNamara. There were three children by this marriage: Donald Townshend1, Marjorie Louisa2 and Victor George3.

George died on 19 August 1917.

The following information was supplied by Victor George Fall:

As a young man, George Edward was sent by his father in 1866 to Dundee, to learn the family business. In 1885, with a junior partner, M.H.Woolley, he founded a business: "M.H.Fall & Co." (The M.H. was from Woolley and there was no "& Co.")  The clothing factory was in Long Buckby and the building was still there in 1960.

Gilbert & Sullivan's opera, H.M.S. Pinafore, after its first performance in 1878, created a large demand for pinafores, so George concentrated on these, importing artificial silk and other materials from Germany and Japan. By the turn of the century he had built up quite an export trade with Canada and South Africa, and became quite prosperous.

In 1899 he bought  "The Firs" in Long Buckby with its two and one half acres of land. In 1905 he bought out his partner Woolley for ,5,000 and at the same time lent several thousand to his brother Tom4 who had become a lace manufacturer in Nottingham. He never got this back and was henceforth short of capital. The business thrived up to 1914 when the First World War cut material supplies, and exports became difficult. In 1916 be became ill and died on 19 August, 1917.

George is buried in the Anglican churchyard at Long Buckby, and John Fall5 located this in 1958.

illiam Thomas Edward Allerton, the son of Thomas Castleton Allerton and Maryann King, was born at Aldeburgh, Suffolk, England on 27 November 1873.  He married Annie Emily Cater in 1900 and had three children Violet (b.1902), William (b.1903) and Henry (Harry) (b.1905).

The family migrated to Western Australia somewhere between 1910 and 1912. While William worked as a railway fettler in the South-West of the State to save ,20 to buy a quarter acre1 block of land in Harris Street, Palmyra, his wife and children stayed first with friends and then rented a house in South Fremantle, taking in two spinster boarders. William returned to Palmyra and probably worked in labouring jobs until retirement.  At one time he worked for the Mt. Lyell Superphosphate Works in North Fremantle and, later, for the Fremantle tramways.

Clearing their block

and building a house

Initially, the family lived in a tent on their block, while working hard to clear it of eleven large trees. Then they built a small house with occasional help from neighbours. Everyone helped everyone in those days as no one had anything. Improvisation was the rule: William's first bed was on a wire mattress standing on four kerosene tins filled with sand.  William was always a kind, gentle man. He died on 23 May 1957.

Keeping a promise to

visit her family in

England

2 See the entry for

Kay Melson (16021F) for a description of family visits

nnie, the daughter of Edward Cater and Elizabeth Smith, was born at Fincham, Norfolk, England on 15 January 1879. She married William Allerton in 1900 at the age of 21. She and William had three children. Following migration to Western Australia on the Ajana they settled in Harris Street, Palmyra. In the early years life was hard. At first she washed the clothes in kerosene tins1, using a wood fire in the back garden, and fetched water from the nearest supply in Canning Highway. As they saved money, they made improvements. She and William put every part of their land to use, planting fruit trees and grape vines. Annie kept chickens, ducks, geese and a cow. At one time she had seven goats, while William grew vegetables.

Although not tall, Annie in later life weighed fifteen stone.  She had a strong personality and was very determined. Violet considered her a domineering and stern mother. However, she was often very kind, had numerous friends, and could always be heard laughing.

Through hard work she was able to keep a promise made to her mother: After eight years she returned to England to visit her family in England. She took her youngest child, Harry, with her. Her children were important to her and, when they  grew up and  left home, she always expected them to bring their family for a visit every Sunday afternoon2.

She died on 20 January 1951 at the age of 72.

ittle is known of the wife of John Chown. Her grandson, Joseph1, visited her in England in the mid 1950s but, in 1993, could not remember her Christian name. At that time she was well into her eighties and lived in a small unit in Broadstairs. Joseph commented:

She seemed uncertain about my relationship to her because she seemed to confuse Arthur, her eldest son who had died many years before, and Edward, whom she had not seen for so long. However, we eventually established that Edward was the one who went to sea and subsequently became my father. She still had his wooden sea chest under her bed.

rthur William Glover, born in England on 1 January 1863, was the son of William Brooks Glover. He migrated to Western Australia from his home in Streatham, England arriving at Fremantle on the Helena Mena on 8 October 1895. Eventually he became Secretary to the Stock Exchange in Perth. Twice, his mother travelled to Australia to visit him.

Arthur married Louisa Shayer on 22 May 1890 and they had four daughters.

His granddaughter Jean1 thought that he had a drinking problem and that, at a date probably between 1920 and 1922, he visited a friend on a cattle station in the North West of the State. One day he went riding on his horse. The horse returned, but he did not.

One story recounts how he was found dead, sitting up against a tree with his pipe in his mouth. One of his daughters said that he shot himself, although this was denied by another daughter, Vera2, who said he had a heart attack.

Vera was not interested in her father, and when her children, Jean, Bob, Peter and Nancy grew up, they knew nothing of him.
