Brenda Rohl2 who researched the above data made the
following comment: In 1902 when Henry Euean Rumble died, along with the
abstract for his Will appeared the admins of Henry, Frances Mary3
and Joseph Humfrey4 Rumble in the same volume . . . Henry, Frances
and Joseph all died a long time before 1902, and were not in a position to
have ,100 - especially Henry! Grace
must have discovered that there were no death duties or taxes to be paid if a
person left less than ,100,
and as no will or admin had been granted for her deceased brothers or sister,
she invented the ,99
each (this would have been left to their father, but as he had died, it was
indirectly left to her.) Hence Henry Rumble did not write a will, nor did
Frances or Joseph. I believe their names were only used for Grace's benefit
as a tax dodge. |

Before joining the army, he worked at Gravesend but, in October 1892,
at the age of 23, he left his work there to study at home for exams as
Assistant Surveyor Royal Engineers, Civil Staff War Office. In November 1893 he went up for his exams, which took six days. Fourteen took the exams for only
four vacancies. In January 1894 he commenced duty at Woolwich as Warrant
Officer Surveyor, having taken fourth place in the exams. On 31 March 1894 he
left Woolwich to take up duty at Devonport.
Henry became engaged on 25 August 1892 to Ellen Theresa Glanville and
married at Blackheath on 5 July 18941. Ellen was known as Nellie,
and they held a wedding reception with sixty-five relatives and friends
present. Then followed a three week honeymoon at Southwold. Living at Plymouth, Henry returned to work at Devonport. He was
transferred to Shorncliffe Camp2 on 9 October 1896, where he lived
in a large house but was later given an overseas posting. In 1897 he wrote to his sister Kate3 about his life at
Shorncliffe[1]: I
have most comfortable quarters here with 3 acre kitchen garden attached, and a nice strip of
lawn but am expecting my turn abroad within this year or early next. Our
little boy who we now call "Anton" is nearly two years old - our
only one, but the life of our small household. It
seemed rather remarkable to me that I should be sent to Shorncliffe. I
remember so well 20 years ago when we stayed at (Hatton?) House Sandgate how
we used to walk up the hill with the Pater and see the troops. Our situation
is delightful - the best in thewhole camp - The house stands on the edge of
a hill looking up a lovely wooded valley to the right with picturesque houses
dotted here and there between the trees - to the left we see Hythe and right
across a bay to Dungeness Point - 16 miles across.
I
have done all the work in the garden and have a good supply of nearly every
vegetable. The quarters, for which I only have to pay ,20 a year, contain the following
rooms & all large rooms. Drawing room, spare bedroom, pantry, dining room,
nursery, best bedroom, W.C., servant's bedroom, lumber room, wine cellar,
passage 60 feet long, kitchen, scullery, coal cellar, store & larder
& bathroom. You will be
interested, I know, to hear that I am now getting ,210 per annum but, as we are obliged
to keep a nurse as well as a general servant, I find it none too much. The
flower garden, too, is very nice with plenty of roses and flowers to supply
the vases all the summer. The great
drawback is when one is moved, the moving of furniture is not repaid so I was
over ,20 out of pocket when I came
from Devonport. In going abroad,
Nell's passage will be paid by the War Department & also Anton's which is
an (???) - I have no idea at present where we will be sent to next. The pay,
however, is always greatly increased at foreign stations. |

4 "Shortie" is presumably a

not known but John Fall (16021M) has an envelope addressed to Mrs H.H. Rumble,
around 1900-1902, on the back of which is written "Major H.St.John

& Mater both keep well, and now are at Eastbourne with Aunt Alice &
Shortie4, the latter being over 90 and still hale. There
is great commotion everywhere over the coming Queen's Diamond Jubilee. I am
not going to see it - they say over 4 million of people will witness the
procession & enormous prices are being paid for some of the seats.

maintained contact with his sister Kate Rumble and niece Dorothy Fall. |

George died on 19 August 1917. The following information was supplied by Victor George Fall: As
a young man, George Edward was sent by his father in 1866 to Dundee, to learn
the family business. In 1885, with a junior partner, M.H.Woolley, he founded a
business: "M.H.Fall & Co." (The M.H. was from Woolley
and there was no "& Co.")
The clothing factory was in Long Buckby and the building was still
there in 1960. Gilbert
& Sullivan's opera, H.M.S. Pinafore, after its first performance in 1878,
created a large demand for pinafores, so George concentrated on these,
importing artificial silk and other materials from Germany and Japan. By the
turn of the century he had built up quite an export trade with Canada and
South Africa, and became quite prosperous. In
1899 he bought "The Firs"
in Long Buckby with its two and one half acres of land. In 1905 he bought out
his partner Woolley for ,5,000
and at the same time lent several thousand to his brother Tom4
who had become a lace manufacturer in Nottingham. He never got this back
and was henceforth short of capital. The business thrived up to 1914 when
the First World War cut material supplies, and exports became difficult. In
1916 be became ill and died on 19 August, 1917. George is buried in the Anglican churchyard at Long Buckby, and John

ittle is known of Thomas, the second son of James Fall and Louisa Townshend.
Victor Fall1 stated that he became a lace manufacturer in Nottingham
and that his older brother George once lent him several thousand pounds, which
was never repaid. We know that he married and had a son, also called Thomas. We
do not know his date of birth or death.

ittle is known of Jenny. She was
born on 31 July 1864, but there is conflicting information about her place of

Inverness, Scotland, while the other gives Syston Park, England. She married Thomas Melson and had ten
children. She died on 14 July 1949 (at Maltby, England?).
012A 14 026A M ALLERTON WILLIAM THOMAS EDWARD 36,48-49 (27.11.1873)
He is shown in his parents' bible as Thomas William, but his daughter
Violet's wedding certificate shows him as William Thomas, and this was
the way he was known.

illiam Thomas Edward Allerton, the son of Thomas Castleton Allerton and
Maryann King, was born at Aldeburgh, Suffolk, England on 27 November 1873. He married Annie Emily Cater in 1900 and had
three children Violet (b.1902), William (b.1903) and Henry (Harry) (b.1905).
The family migrated to Western Australia somewhere between 1910 and
1912. While William worked as a railway fettler in the South-West of the State
to save ,20 to buy a quarter acre1
block of land in Harris Street, Palmyra, his wife and children stayed first
with friends and then rented a house in South Fremantle, taking in two spinster
boarders. William returned to Palmyra and probably worked in labouring jobs
until retirement. At one time he worked
for the Mt. Lyell Superphosphate Works in North Fremantle and, later, for the
Fremantle tramways.
Living in a tent.
Clearing their block
and building a house
Initially, the family lived in a tent on their block, while working hard
to clear it of eleven large trees. Then they built a small house with occasional
help from neighbours. Everyone helped everyone in those days as no one had
anything. Improvisation was the rule: William's first bed was on a wire
mattress standing on four kerosene tins filled with sand. William was always a kind, gentle man. He
died on 23 May 1957.

Migration to Australia 1 A kerosene tin had a 4 gallon (18.2 litre)
capacity and was about 23c square and 34c deep. Kerosene was much used as a
lamp fuel. When empty it was put to a multitude of uses Personality 15 stone = 210 lbs. = 95 kg Keeping a promise to visit her family in England 2 See the entry for Kay Melson (16021F) for a description of family visits |
|
Although not tall, Annie in later life weighed fifteen stone. She had a strong personality and was very
determined. Violet considered her a domineering and stern mother. However, she
was often very kind, had numerous friends, and could always be heard
laughing. Through hard work she was able to keep a promise made to her mother:
After eight years she returned to England to visit her family in England. She
took her youngest child, Harry, with her. Her children were important to her
and, when they grew up and left home, she always expected them to
bring their family for a visit every Sunday afternoon2. She died on 20 January 1951 at the age of 72. |

ittle is known of the wife of John Chown. Her grandson, Joseph1,
visited her in England in the mid 1950s but, in 1993, could not remember her
Christian name. At that time she was well into her eighties and lived in a
small unit in Broadstairs. Joseph commented:
She
seemed uncertain about my relationship to her because she seemed to confuse
Arthur, her eldest son who had died many years before, and Edward, whom she had
not seen for so long. However, we eventually established that Edward was the
one who went to sea and subsequently became my father. She still had his wooden
sea chest under her bed.

rthur William Glover, born in England on 1 January 1863, was the son of
William Brooks Glover. He migrated to Western Australia from his home in
Streatham, England arriving at Fremantle on the Helena Mena on 8 October
1895. Eventually he became Secretary to the Stock Exchange in Perth. Twice,
his mother travelled to Australia to visit him.
Arthur married Louisa Shayer on 22 May 1890 and they had four daughters.
His granddaughter Jean1 thought that he had a drinking
problem and that, at a date probably between 1920 and 1922, he visited a friend
on a cattle station in the North West of the State. One day he went riding on
his horse. The horse returned, but he did not.
One story recounts how he was found dead, sitting up against a tree with
his pipe in his mouth. One of his daughters said that he shot himself, although
this was denied by another daughter, Vera2, who said he had a heart
attack.
Vera was not interested in her father, and when her children, Jean, Bob,
Peter and Nancy grew up, they knew nothing of him.
